Falling in love...

I've been busy, lately, falling in love. Falling in love with postpartum doula work. Falling in love with the big, emotional, tender time that is the first few weeks of a baby's life. Falling in love with working with moms and families and supporting them through this time. Falling in love with seeing moms and dads - whether it's their first, second, or even third baby - rediscover who they are in relationship to this new being in their arms.

When you fall in love, you feel joy. There is something absolutely magical about getting to spend time with my clients as they go through these early weeks. Whether it's being a listening ear for the tearful hormonal stories that need to be told, offering education about breastfeeding and baby care, sweeping the floor, or simply holding a baby while mom has a long, hot shower - this work is a joy.

When you fall in love, you feel excitement. The future feels so bright to me these days - both in terms of how I feel about my work, and in the strong bonds I see being formed in the families I work with. It's beautiful to feel so hopeful and to get to play a small role in getting new families off to a great start. I leave every shift with a client whistling and feeling full of energy. This work is exciting.

When you fall in love, you want more! I want to see postpartum doulas grow in Regina. I want more families to know that this sort of personalized, compassionate, and non-judgemental support is available - and that it can help them with the transition of the postpartum period, whether this is their first baby or their fifth. And I want for us as a community to offer more resources, more services, more ideas, more safe spaces for all families. I want more.

Falling in love is a wonderful time. And it's only the beginning...
